A specialist publication can accumulate valuable material, but finding a topic again often means remembering the issue and leafing through its pages. Without the publication at hand, readers may know they have seen the information but still be unable to retrieve it.

Electronic files are easier to carry, yet growing collections can still require opening, searching, and comparing files individually. Digitizing content does not automatically make it easier to find.

We developed a literature search system for a healthcare-related organization, bringing its publication summaries and key points into an app. Users can find and read specialist content on their phones, including offline access for reference on the move.

Start with how readers look for information

Rather than reproducing entire publications on a phone, the app focuses on summaries and key points so readers can first understand what an article covers.

People looking for a particular topic no longer need to carry every issue or search numerous files separately. A common entry point lets them begin with their question or subject of interest.

Use is not restricted to a particular profession. People needing references for daily work and readers interested in the field can both access the specialist material.

Reduce searching through files with keywords

Paper publications have no search function, and electronic files may be stored in different places. The system addresses this with keyword searches across the app’s content.

A reader who remembers a topic but not its publication date can enter related keywords and identify the article through the returned summaries and key points.

This changes the starting point from finding an issue or file to finding relevant content, reducing repeated opening and browsing.

Read offline without relying on a current connection

Mobile reading does not always happen with reliable internet access. The app supports offline reading of content already made available on the device.

For users who need portable references, it is more than a tool they can open only when connected. It also supports reading while traveling or in areas with unreliable connectivity.

We considered search and offline access as parts of the same experience: one helps readers find material, while the other makes it easier to use wherever they are.

Maintain the collection through an administration interface

As publications continue to accumulate, the app needs a way to manage new material. Administrators can update the collection through the backend, gradually bringing summaries and key points into a shared reading resource.

The system provides tools for organizing, displaying, and finding existing publication content in a mobile-friendly form. Its focus is summaries and highlights, not a complete full-text journal platform.

Make accumulated knowledge easier to find and use

The project improves how readers reach existing content. Mobile access addresses the inconvenience of carrying paper, while centralized collection and keyword search offer a more direct route through scattered electronic files.

Starting with how readers could make better use of material that already existed, we combined summary reading, search, offline access, and administrative updates to bring specialist publications closer to everyday reference needs.
